CNC Drawing Review: Build a More Useful Manufacturing Brief

A practical checklist for connecting geometry, material, finish and acceptance requirements before requesting a quotation.

Start with the decision

A useful drawing package lets engineering, procurement and quality review the same requirement. Identify whether the immediate goal is feasibility, a fit-check sample, production-intent validation or a repeat release. Those purposes require different information.

Identify one controlling revision

Keep the CAD, drawing and requirement notes aligned. Name the controlling revision and mark any intentional differences. If a reference model is supplied only for context, say so. Separate mandatory geometry from features still open to review.

Connect critical features to function

Explain which surfaces locate the part, which bores or shafts form a fit, and which dimensions control assembly. A drawing full of tight tolerances can obscure the few features that matter. Provide a coherent datum scheme and identify the final condition in which acceptance is assessed.

Specify the material and final condition

“Aluminum” or “stainless” describes a family. State the alloy or grade, temper or heat treatment, and any required material documentation. Record whether an alternative is allowed and who can approve it. The same discipline applies to engineering plastics: grade, fillers and conditioning can matter to fit and performance.

Bring the finish into the geometry

A coating or treatment may affect mating dimensions and masking requirements. Distinguish cosmetic surfaces, functional contact surfaces and surfaces that require protection during handling. Include the finish specification and the acceptance method rather than relying on a color name alone.

Define inspection and handover

List the dimensions or features needing documented results. Agree the requested report format, material records, identification and sample approval before release. A photograph of a part does not demonstrate dimensional conformity.

Make quantity and timing explicit

Separate sample quantity, first order quantity and expected repeat demand. Give the delivery destination and the milestone the parts support. A requested date is an input for review; it becomes a commitment only after the project scope is confirmed.

Use the checklist before sending

Provide current CAD and drawing; identify material and final finish; highlight critical features; state quantity and destination; name the required records; list open questions and approval responsibilities. Keep a copy of the submitted package with the project revision.

Frequently asked questions

Does this guide confirm a manufacturing specification?

No. It helps organize the project review. Final feasibility, process, tolerances, commercial terms and delivery need order-specific confirmation.

What if an input is still undecided?

Identify it as an open question and describe the function or constraint it must satisfy. Confirm the chosen option before release.
