MATERIAL SELECTION
How to choose aluminum for CNC machining
Start with the part’s operating environment and the features that control fit. Load, corrosion exposure, weight and the required surface finish all influence the alloy and temper to review.
A general-purpose housing, a structural bracket and a fluid-system manifold can call for different material decisions. Compare the grade options against your drawing, and identify which requirements are fixed and which can be discussed.
Before requesting a quotation, share the current drawing revision, preferred grade and temper, quantity and finishing requirements. Material availability, the machining approach and the inspection scope should be confirmed for the specific part.
Compare the requirements that matter
| Requirement | What to review | Include in your brief |
|---|---|---|
| Operating environment | Corrosion, temperature and exposure | Where the part will be used |
| Mechanical function | Load, weight and critical interfaces | Drawing and functional requirements |
| Surface condition | Finish, appearance and mating features | Finish and inspection requirements |
Plan the surface finish with the material

As-machined
Tool marks and the required surface condition are reviewed.
Bead-blasted
Agree texture, masking and final dimensions.
Anodized
Confirm the finish specification and mating surfaces.
