Show what controls the function
- Mark the surfaces that locate, seal, support or move against another component.
- Build the datum scheme around those relationships and explain any unusual mating condition.
Review access and holding
- Highlight deep pockets, narrow slots, undercuts and internal corners that may restrict the tool.
- Consider how a part can be held without damaging thin sections or cosmetic surfaces.
Specify only what is required
- Use tight tolerances where the function needs them. Unnecessary blanket control can increase machining and inspection work.
- Separate general edge treatment and surface requirements from individual critical features.
KEEP THE SCOPE CLEAR
A practical review table.
| Feature | Review question | Useful information |
|---|---|---|
| Internal corners | Does the function need a sharp corner? | Mating geometry and permitted corner relief or radius. |
| Deep pockets & holes | Can the feature be reached and checked? | Section view, depth, diameter and access direction. |
| Thin sections | How will the part behave during holding and machining? | Material, wall geometry, functional purpose and allowable changes. |
| Threads | Is the definition complete? | Thread standard, pitch, depth, entry and relief requirements. |
| Critical fits | Which relationship controls the assembly? | Datum references, mating part and final-condition tolerances. |
Questions to clarify.
Why does this guide avoid a single minimum wall or maximum depth?+
Such limits depend on material, geometry, tools, holding and acceptance requirements. The actual drawing is the basis for a useful review.
Can manufacturing suggestions change the function?+
Any proposed change should be identified explicitly and approved by the design authority. Keep the accepted change in a controlled drawing revision.
